Game Dev Log: Six

So yeah… I am completely and utterly devastated. There was recent update with Buildbox which completely ruined my game. The shop system that took a while to setup no longer works. I have to change almost every UI screen because of a weird error/situation with an object. Everything was working fine before this update. The easy thing to do would to continue working on the older version but since I’m going to be switching plans soon, I have to stick with the current update. Anything can happen at any time. I was thinking maybe I can start all over again and switch the project over to Bolt. It looks like a steeper learning curve and I have no idea how to set up a character shop. When this first happened, I was at a lost. Now, I’m in shock¬† and maybe denial. I spent a year working on this game. I wasted hundreds of dollars in an unstable software program, hoping it would help me publish my dream. I’ve dealt with constant crashes, optimization issues, issues with adding certain animations to the software, so much more. I had to start over before because of an issue with the atlas but it was earlier in game development process. It felt like I was going insane around March. Right at the point when everything was looking ok and I was focused on level building this happens. I just can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it.

A part of me doesn’t want to give up but I don’t want to start all over again. I have no idea what to do. I have zero experience with code. I don’t know how to fix the issues. Here are my options:

  • Option 1: I have to figure how to keep going and change core elements of the game. Character shop will be removed and one of the main storylines will most likely be gone as well.
  • Option 2: Start all over again with Bolt. This will take the longest time to recover and there’s more uncertainty. I have no idea if I can create the same game which would put me right back in the same situation as option 1.
  • Option 3: Stop making the game. I really don’t want to do this. I’m very upset that this is even an option at this point.

I can’t say enough how much I hate Buildbox. I don’t think an update should cause this to happen. And even if an update destroys everything, you should always have the option to work with a previous version that was working better. Since certain features are not going to be available, I am forced to work this horrible update. The main feature is being able to export to mobile and saving the game. I can’t stay on the Pro plan because they no longer offer a monthly subscription, only yearly. At this point, I’m not going to invest 500 additional dollars on this software if this can happen. I don’t have that much money to waste. This is a joke. Simply… To be so close to trying to finish this game and for this to happen. I honestly thought I jumped over all the difficult hurdles and I could make this game happen. This hurts so much. I know it’s just a game but when I started making this I was in a really bad spot in my life.¬† It helped pushed me through a difficult time. Feels like I’m back where I was a year ago but this feels so much worse.

I’m taking a break for now. Maybe in a few days or possibly weeks, I’m able to continue or figure something out. Then again… maybe not.
